As many of you know we are based on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Not only a great place to live & work.... but also fortunately for us the home to the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Championships.
Ironman recently released the bike course. A bit different to the usual bike course they run for the annual Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast triathlon. So we went for a spin to check it out and here it is in a nutshell.
> The first 45k are fairly standard. It's mostly highway, good surface and flatish. It will be quick.
> Next 35k are where it gets interesting as it heads into the back roads (see images). As per the profile there is not a huge amount of vertical but profile does not really do it justice. It is not easy and a good rhythm busting section. Plenty of variations in grade and an average road surface (typical Australian back roads). The real 'winner' is as you turn into Rosemount there are 3 x 20% kickers. These are short and sharp and back to back. A quality 1,2,3.
> Last 10k you get back on the highway and head back into town.
This is not your average fast and flat Ironman bike course. They are mixing it up which is great and will make it an interesting one... We're looking forward to having everyone here on the Sunny Coast!
